Black & White Commercial Detection

Hi Jere;

I listened to that interview on the Internet where you talked about using aspect ratio and logo's etc for determining where commericals are.

Recently I recorded a bunch of black & white shows (the longest day - possibly the longest movie!) and I noticed that while it got most of the commericals (75% or more) there were still some there.

Question: Even though demand for people recording black & white shows is probably not that high - shouldn't commercial detection for black & white be, well, black & white ?

If I take into consideration things such as logo detection and aspect ratio changes maybe a color commercial stands out like a sore thumb in the middle of a black & white movie?

Again, I understand that probably not many people are recording b&w shows but if it's relatively easy to programmatically make the software detect color changes then SA would probably achieve 100% detection on black & white shows...

Just a thought :-) One thing is for sure - Show Analyzer is a really great product. I use it with DVRMS Toolbox and it's incredible. Never crashes, I never see it doing it's thing - it's all automated behind the scenes stuff that works 100% of the time. Way to go!

Hmmmm..... color detection could be taken a bit further....

I was just watching the Simpsons and realized that if you could pick up on not only black and white but also other colors it might help with commercial detection.

If you could not only detect black & white but also colors then it would be easy to pick off commercials from an animated series like the Simpsons.

Color detection as a tool for determining commericals - who'd a thunk it?
