Default SchoolHouse vs ShowAnalyzer performance

I just tried running SchoolHouse with SA 8.9.111 on a 30 minute US 1080 HD show that did a sloppy job at defining commercial segment start and stop points in SA (a few seconds early or late on most segments).

To my surprise, SchoolHouse was spot-on in finding all the commercial segment start and stop points. Unfortunately, these settings didn't seem to translate to the .txt file that I use in SageTV.

Does anyone know if this is an SA problem, a Comskip STVI problem, a SageTV problem or something else?

BTW, this does not seem to be a problem with analog broadcaasts...only HD.

I have read that the txt files are inaccurate for HD files in Sage. According to what I have read, the edl files work much better.

I've heard this too. A while back, after I finally got the Comskip SageTV STVI to work with edl files, I was not able to observe any improvements in playback accuracy. However, once I update to SageTV 6, I'll plan on giving edl files another try if txt files still produce inacurrate playback results.

It certainly does appear to be a Sage-related issue.

Thanks again!

I don't think it's a Sage issue. I'm more inclined to believe it is a DirectShow issue. DirectShow has never been big on accurate seeking.

Interesting. I only notice the playback problem with HD recordings (or at least it's much worse). Is it reasonable to say that DirectShow does a poorer job on HD than analog sources?

Are you aware of any versions of (or tweaks to) DirectShow that might work better?

Thanks again for your insights.

DirectShow is more of an infrastructure than anything else so it can't be tweaked. Only the "blocks" (called filters) that DS uses can be tweaked. And even then it isn't their fault. Changing the demuxer filter can sometimes make the seeking "more" accurrate, but it will never be frame accurate.
