I don't know if you follow my blog thread, so I'm reposting here as well.

Microsoft rejected my request for an ASF license. I guess I need to be a company. Or I may have requested the wrong license for what I want. Time (or MS) will tell.

That said, I was looking at the EULA in the ASF specification and I think it says that I am automatically provided a license provided I comply with the restrictions. The main restriction is that source code must be only for internal use (i.e. don't distribute source code). This may be why VirtualDub had issues with MS over the ASF container. The next line says that I can distribute object code. Interesting. Hopefully this is all I need to avoid having all my assets taken away in a lawsuit. I'm going to ask for clarification, so again, time (or MS) will tell.

Anyone care to comment on this?

Do you have a link to the EULA? I did a quick search in google and didn't find anything... I'm not a lawyer but I'll give it a read.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...t/asfspec.aspx

That is the link to the page that has the specification. The EULA is on the first few pages of the specification.

From what I read on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...licensing.aspx

I sure sounds like licensing is only needed for hardware and non-Windows based software.

If you go to download the Windows Media 9 SDK, it seems to indicate that you need to contact MS for a license only if you will be manipulating files protected by digital rights management.

I hope you all understand why I'm being cautious. Microsoft has much more money for lawyers than I do.

completely understandable...

seems to indicate that you only need an explict license on platforms other than windows. the implict license grants usage rights as long as you don't distribute the source code and you don't circumvent drm.

I'm happy to wait until MS confirms the usage restrictions... better to have an SA that works on MPEG then no SA.

I have called Microsoft and talked to the licensing department. They (after much hemming and hawing) agreed that the EULA in the specification does seem to provide for my intended use. The EULA for the SDK also seems to allow for what I want except that I can't port it to Linux. Since I do plan on having a Linux version, I'm going to stick to using the information in the ASF specification.

Bottom line: DVR-MS support is back on the priority list.
