Default Show Analyzer locks up my machine every time

I have tried setting Show Analyzer to 5%CPU and 2 on 'slow down' settings whatever that means with no luck. I keep comming back to check for new versions but I just don't have any luck. Everytime I load SA, it locks up after less than a minute. Please help, from what I have seen, this is the best com skip option out there as all the others result in severe data loss.

Is this on every video file you try or only one?

It has been every one. The new 0.6 preview is better and so far (after about 12 hrs) hasn't locked it up. The 0.6 preview locked it up at 80%CPU but this time changing the CPU to 30% actually had an effect and it does not seem to be locking up. I may drop it down lower. Time will tell but yes, its every file and it has to do with how hard the system has to work on my old Athlon 2600.

Sounds like your CPU's overheating. Time for at least a thorough clean up of the case and maybe a new CPU fan and possibly a case fan to get air moving. CPU temp shouldn't rise above 70?C and should actually keep significantly lower. You can use programs such as Motherboard Monitor to check your system temperatures.

I have to agree. A properly setup and cooled computer should be able to run at 100% cpu usage indefinately.

I strongly recommend you take a close look at your CPU cooling. When you try to fix it, you can even use SA to max out the CPU for testing.

Yep, that sounds like a plan. The fan seems to be running smoothly but I am sure there are better fans out there. Maybe I can get something that won't break the bank. How does measurement of CPU temperature work. I don't see how it could give an actual temp read-out?

There are actually temperature sensors both on the motherboard and in the CPU. They're not 100% accurate but give a precise enough reading for most applications. You can usually check the temperatures in the BIOS, but these are idle temperatures and temp get way higher under load. Depending on the brand of your motherboard, it's possible that there's a monitoring program on the CD that shipped with it. If not, try Motherboard Monitor at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/. List of supported motherboards at http://mbm.livewiredev.com/mobolist.html
Decent coolers range from $15 and up. Invest $25 and you'll have yourself a quiet and powerful CPU cooler. And put $5-$10 more and you'll have a case fan to go with it. No need to buy those $50-$150 coolers unless you want absolutely the best money can buy.

Some important questions:

Are you overclocking? If so, you apparently need a better fan/heatsink.

Have you removed the heatsink since it was originally put on? If so, you probably just need to take it off, remove the old thermal pad and apply a quality thermal paste. Those thermal pads that come preinstalled on heatsinks are good for one (and only one) application. Once you pull the heatsink off the thermal pad is no good. If that is the case then your heatsink has no way to pull the heat from the cpu and you'll get frequent lock ups under stress. A $5 tube of silver paste and you'll be back in business.
