Comskip doesn't actually skip the commercials. It only identifies where they are in a form that SageTV can use to skip them. SA does the same thing.

I was referring to the STV support comskip has- in which "Auto Comskip" can be enabled or disabled- while watching.

Basically my question is that if I am watching a recorded show using the SageTV interface- will using SA and a supported STV automatically "skip" the detected section and continue playing without me having to manually hit the skip key. Please point me to a supported STV if this is already in place- sorry for these newbie questions and once again thanks for the support.

This will operate the same whether you use SA or comskip.

Ok. Yes. You will need to make sure there is a check beside the comskip output in SAConfig.

I believe you can use pretty much any STV. It will either have the commercial skip built in or you can use nielm's commercial skip import to add the ability.

There is the seperate issue of running SA to deal with though. There are some STV's (I don't know which) that will utilize the .txt files to skip commercials but they won't actually run comskip or SA. If you use one of those then DirMon is a possible alternative. There is a thread in the DirMon forum that shows you how to set it up for the integration of DirMon, SA, and SageTV.

No need for apologies. I'd rather you ask than give up.

Default Help with setup

I've downloaded and installed the free version to try out. I run it through a show that was recorded by sagetv. ShowAnalayzer generated a *.txt file for the show. My question is what do I have to do to get SageTV to use the file and show the comercial skip points. Right now when I play the show in SageTV it does not look any differrent.

Thanks
Vrojack

just enable the secret features in the setup menu, refer to the sage forums for instructions. That will enable malore style menus and lots of other goodies including automatic com skip

Default The Basics?

Forgive a posting by a newbie....

I love the idea of automatically skipping commercials, will buy Showanalyzer and Dirmon in a minute once I get them working, but so far have been unsuccessful.

Some background - I'm running Sage 4-point-something on a Win2000 box. My intent is to get it to the point of just automatically skipping commercials during playback. I'm also intrigued by the idea of running something like comclean to strip out commercials before burning to DVD but we'll leave that for a later day (and since my DVD authoring software is PinnacleStudio 10 wouldn't it be wonderful if SA could output a Studio-compatible "scn" edit file..?)

Anyway, I have Dirmon and SA downloaded and installed, I have the trial key entered (thanks!) I have comskip downloaded but don't know if I need it or what I do with it.

I like to think I'm a "relatively advanced" user - I started in the days when there were no hard discs, you were lucky if you had two floppies in a machine because you could boot from one and keep data on the other, and have kept up with it since - I know what a command line parameter is, how batch files work, how to edit the registry, what a PATH= means, etc.. But I can't get this to work for some reason.

I've followed the directions under the Dirmon thread to the letter. It's log files show "checking directory" (the directory is correct) but ultimately "nothing to do". There are roughly 100 *.mpg files in that directory - one would think there's something to do..

If I run SA ineractively, choosing one of the mpg files manually, I get a txt file with that filename, it says "File processing complete" and shows what look like a series of start and stop frame numbers, but this doesn't happen using Dirmon to fire SA, and even with the manually generated SA txt file Sage doesn't seem to know what to do with it.

I know it's not the software, lots of people have it working, it's just my own stupidity in setting it up correctly..

There are various partial postings addressing one little bit of this all over the place in this and the Sage forum - is there one compendium somewhere that gives a step-by-step on "if you have Sage and want to use SA to get it to auto skip commercials, here's what you do from start to finish.."?

Thanks!

Todd

In all likelyhood, you overlooked the trigger block. Take a careful look at the trigger block in the screenshot in this thread.

that was what i had overlooked. That little "TXT" is so important. Seems to me that you shuold have that as the default in that field when the program is installed.
