What am I doing wrong??

In attempting to adjust the settings for SA, I don't seem to get anything to stick. First, when making a setting change, should the box on the right display a plus sign or a minus sign?? Which one indicates an active setting?
Then, if I change the seemingly default minus to a plus, it is changed BACK to a minus sign when I re-open the program. I've tried "saving" the change in the file drop down box, and I've also just tried closing the settings box. This also results in the setting reverting back to a minus.
Which do I want, + or - , and how do I get it to stay changed?
Also, I can apparently run SA manually, but there is no indication on the screen that it is running. The txt and edl files indicate that they have been changed (although I would like to use edl ONLY, but can't seem to figure out how to change that-see above) but I can't seem to get any visual progress box.

First, which version of SA are you running? Second what OS is this running on?

SA is version 0.9.7.290 running on XP Home with SP3.

Looks like I've sort of figured out how to change settings, but I am unable to use edl files to mark commercials. Setting Mplayer to start when processing begins, and having Dirmon2 set to edl for "must not exist," and setting GV-PBR or SageTV to "never." I am running SagetV version 6 btw.
So, having no success there, I reverted the settings to function with txt files, and, even though SA marked the commercials properly, the program ran all night on shows some of which I recorded and watched while recording last evening, and one that I did not watch.

I really wish I understood more about this stuff................

0.9.7.290 is no longer a supported version. For one thing it doesn't work with files from the HD-PVR. What is the source for the files it worked on all night?

The shows were recorded from analog cable using a Hauppauge 1600 tuner card.

Should I be downloading and installing the latest version of SA ?? Is that a free upgrade?

I asked about the version because most people on the forums have moved on to version 1.0. You can see if you have a license for SAV1 by going to Dragon Global - ShowAnalyzer - Retrieve Keys and trying to retrieve your key. Version 1.0 is significantly different from the version you're currently using.

As to your problems with edl files, are they being created at all? If the txt files contain the information for the breaks then the edl files certainly should contain the same data. The actual analysis isn't any different, just the format of the file that is created. Can you try to open one of the edl files to see if there is anything in it. It could be that SageTV just isn't looking at the edl files.

I have not pursued using only EDL files any further, as per a successful setup recommended to me in the SageTV forum I have set up DirMon2 and SA to use both TXT and EDL files. I really see no difference at this time to the results when using TXT files only. Somewhere along the line I had gotten the impression that EDL is more dependable, but I haven't seen any indication of that.

EDL files are being generated, with content being shown in bytes, but I have not attempted to open them.

Using Schoolhouse I have analyzed some errors in detection, but not all. One segment went as one continuous commercial 240 seconds in length. There actually were several commercials in the segment, but no intermediate markers. I cannot figure out why the segment was considered to be one continuous commercial my SA. I reset the commercial length limit parameter from 180sec to 250sec to compensate. Other segments mark breaks within a segment, but do not include these as commercials. Can it be that there are no TXT or EDL files to be generated for these particular commercials within the segment? Are networks or advertisers becoming increasingly tricky in this regard?

As I lack the rudimentary knowledge to understand what TXT or EDL files actually are, I am at a loss to further diagnose the problem there.
